Director Lance Hammer's debut is astounding. Ballast is a quiet, beautiful visual poem that will captivate you. The film is set in the Mississippi Delta and follows the lives of a young boy and his mother as they struggle with life, death and family bonds. The visuals are breathtaking and the audio / soundtrack of the film forces you to be present in the moment. Robert Koehler from Variety sums it up best: "Exquisite soundtrack should be studied by American filmmakers of all types, since it relies on actual sound derived from the story's evocative environment, without a drop of composed music."
This film is a must see.
Ballast was the winner of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Directing Award and the Execellence in Cinematography Award.
